About us

The Maydelle Way

Steve Harper unloading fruit

Maydelle Country Wines is a small family run winery that sits out at the edge of the little town of Maydelle, Texas.  The Texas State Railroad runs through the forested back yard, rattling the windows of our old depot as it passes. Just outside a town saturated in history, Maydelle Winery resides within an old train depot from the 1800’s. The Harpers have been on this hillside since the early 1970’s, and have raised three generations of children in these woods.

Steven Harper is the owner, founder, vintner, chief picker of fruits, fearless elderberry hunter, and good friend to all.  His winning spirit and quick wit make him laugh while at work or away.  Ask him how he got started when you visit the winery, it’s whale of tale you won’t want to miss!

Torrance Shepherd is our second generation wine maker and has grown up in the business. He’s in the process of taking over for “The Old Man” and we’re looking forward to the changes and new things that he’s bringing in.

Cheryl Ivie-Harper can politely be called the “know-it-all” around here.  She handles the sales, paperwork, stock, where to find things, and where things go.  She’s also glad to let you know about other wineries in the area and upcoming wine events.

With children, grandchildren, family and friends, we have been at this for over 20 years, and are looking forward to at least another decade or three of fruity delights.

So, come on, brave the dirt road, and join the fruit revolution.

  1. It has been sometime since I discovered Maydelle wines. I was riding on the railroad when I spotted your little sign next to the track. I told my wife let’s go see, we drove up, I jumped out and heard the doors lock, she thought it looked shady. I walked in and Steve, in his tie dyed t-shirt, started stacking bottles on top of the bar. I bolted outside and told my wife she wouldn’t believe what’s happening, I convinced her to come in and Steve without missing a beat started asking us what we wanted to try, all of it I said. We started chatting learned about Steve bought several bottles. We were invited that nite to come back and listen to some ole pickers playing and singin…Ihave never forgotten that experience. So glad to see you have been so successful.

    1. Boy, that’s been a while back! Glad to know you’re still thinking of us. If you haven’t been out lately, you should. We’ve got some new wines and even fixed the porch. 🙂 No music any more, but Steve’s still here. Thanks again for the kind words and braving the dirt road.

  2. Cheryl Ivie, I be darned! I was just surfing the web looking for things to do in east texas and came across your business. Good for you girl! Darlene/Frankston,Texas

    1. It’s been forever!! Not doing too bad out here in the woods. If you’re still in Frankston, come out to the Art Walk in April. I’m usually out there with our stuff. I’d love to see you!

    1. If it’s still in the bottle, it’ll be good for several years. I wouldn’t set it aside for your grandbaby’s college graduation if they’re under 15 though. 🙂 Does this help? Thanks for asking.
